What you can expect

Organising a one-to-one live-in carer for a loved one is a big decision. We can clearly guide you to on what to expect.  

What you can expect from your carer

Personal

Every action is centred around maximising the safety, comfort, and wellbeing of the person having care.

Washing and grooming

Daily support with washing, grooming and getting dressed. If you need they will help with applying cosmetic creams or make-up, hair removal, and nail filing.  You may also request help with  the application and removing items such as hearing aids, prostheses or dental orthoses.

Support with toileting

Help with personal or toileting care. If require assistance to and from the bathroom and into the shower or bath. If advanced personal care is required our team are on hand to help support this. 

Help to get about

Support with safely moving around the house for all day-to-day activities. This can include qualified operating of specialist equipment wheelchairs, frames etc.  If specified.

Nutrition and hydration

Your carer will help you plan and cook your meals, according to your dietary requirements and will shop for your groceries. If feeding is through PEG,  you will have to make other arrangements.

Sleep and night-time

Usually, carers can support at night-time, such as making sure all necessary items are accessible and the person having care is comfortable. They can help with disturbances up to two times per night, for around 15 minutes on average.

If disturbances are frequent, other arrangements will need to be made between you, the carer and Elder. We also recommend a commode is made available to help ensure safety.

 
 
 

Domestic

These are tasks ensuring a safe and happy environment for your loved one to enjoy.

Domestic and household support

Carry out cleaning, keeping the house neat and tidy, kitchen and bathroom areas to be kept hygienic.  So you can live in your home the way you always have.  Also doing the laundry to ensure the person being cared for have clean linens, towels and clothes.

On a regular basis it is advised to hiring a  professional cleaner, to deep clean the house. 

Shopping and household management

The carer will help with buying food and other necessary household items. They will be happy to run errands for you.

Diary planning

Remind you of all your medical appointments, events and dates, and also inform your family of any big events.

Activities and companionship

Your carer will outline social interests and encourage you take part in activities, they will support you to maintain your hobbies and activities. The carer will also support you to continue to feel connected to friends and any community events. 

The carer will provide companionship by spending time with you often as you want, they will keep you occupied and engage in conversation. The carer will care for pets if has been previously agreed.

 

Emergencies

In the event of an emergency, firstly the carer will always call the relevant emergency service and then your family contact.  Even in there is a fall the carer will follow this practice.  They are trained to do this as in order to prevent further injury.

Carer handovers

If needed,  your current carer will communicate in person all the necessary information to the incoming carer.  Unless otherwise agreed.
